… I would dearly love to be the person that gives that rifle a fair chance to prove itself. After all it was Mr. Whelen that said so long ago that only accurate rifles were interesting. He also knows what accuracy is and I think we would both agree that three MOA is not it especially in the type of small caliber moderate velocity rifle for which accuracy is its greatest virtue. I also like accurate rifles but I remember writers being happy with 3” groups at 100 yards. These were hunting rifles, not benchrest rifles and the groups were often shot from field positions. Target shooters need something more accurate but hunters? I realize hunting has changed a lot from when I started more than 1/2 century ago. Back then, we still hunted, stalked, and got as close as we could. Now, I see elevated shooting boxes and the hunter expects the game to come to him, at least here in the East. I still stalk and shoot from field positions. So, I would not mind that kind of accuracy. Kevin

Hey Kevin! Thanks for posting the picture! Looks like a sweet rifle for sure! I’m not surprised you got a great deal on it from Gander Mountain I think you said. I’m not sure what the qualifications are for being the person to price firearms but they must be pretty lax. Like I said before I’ve always wanted a Springfield 1922 but they have all been on the too expensive for a 22 side for me. One like yours in 22 Hornet looks wonderful. As an aside, I got a deal when the local Cabelas opened here just below Chattanooga. Standing in line with the other folks waiting to get in I noticed an older lady probably in her early 80s and her daughter I assumed. They each were carrying an armful of guns. Speaking with them I learned that her husband had passed a few months earlier and nobody in the family wanted the guns so she was going to try and sell them. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the Remington 11-48 she was holding was a 16ga because I could see the purple hull sticking out from the magazine tube!! Long story short all 11 guns they had were loaded! The ladies had no idea! I figure I saved somebody from being shot that day since I unloaded all the guns. When the manager came out to see the ladies for himself I jokingly asked if I got a reward for making the guns safe. He said “no, but you should”. I finally got to go inside and got to their gun library where all the nicer used guns were. I found a AR18 made in Costa Mesa, California for a great price. Took it to the counter to pay for it and the manager from before was there. He gave me a whole 10% discount for being a good citizen 😂

Hey Pard! What’s that sitting just in front of the scope?

It is the sling. I asked Tina to take the pictures and I see what she did was to tuck the sling under the rifle to prop it up for a better picture. If you look at the butt end of the stock you can see where it goes under.

The scope is a very early K-10 that seemed appropriate for a vintage match up. I started collecting the original K model all steel made in Texas Weavers some years ago when they were available at near give away prices by todays standards. I like them because of the long tube that allows mounting far enough to the rear on single shot rifles to allow proper eye focus for full field of view. On rifles like the Ruger #1 even with extended rings its near impossible to get the scope far enough to the rear for full field view. These old long tube Weavers alleviate the issue completely. Before Weaver started to make junk they made quality and these are from that time of quality with good glass and rugged all steel construction even at the adjustable objective lens. I have a number of them and am glad I started collecting when I did because now like so many other things that were once very affordable they have gone out of reach on prices. Dont confuse these with the later attempt to bring back the K series scopes with plastic objective lens. Those were produced when Weaver was counting on their past reputation to sell inferior merchandise. Those even used plastic lens material and in my opinion were a disgrace to the name and is why Weaver once the #1 scope in the USA and the name Weaver being synonymous with the word scope is now not even in the line up .

Daniel, back about 1980, I bought a Weaver 3 X 9 scope, just because I had a little extra money, & my dealer gave me a discount on it. I didn't have a rifle to put it on at the time, so, it sat on the shelf for years. When I bought my first T/C .50 cal. Hawken, I bought the correct mount for the rifle, & put the Weaver on it. After a few shots, something went bad inside of it, so, I removed it, put it back in the box & packed it away. At some point in time, I found out about a repair facility in Texas, I think. I called, & the man told me that the recoil is different in a M.L., & that I had destroyed the scope & it wasn'r fixable. I still have it in the box. It has the "Parralax" ? adjustable front end & the lenses & outer scope looks very good. Can you use it?You pay the shipping & it's yours.

Gary I thank you for the offer and for always being so generous with me but sad to say I am going to agree with the fella from Texas. The only thing I do with old broken scopes is to remove the ocular lens and use it as a magnifier for looking for small detail and I already have several of those. Also sorry to say that the 80's is when Weaver quality was poor. Their good quality was pre and for a time post WW-2. When the boomers numbers started to increase our population at an accelerated rate due to the growing prosperity of the general population after the war Weaver apparently thought they could sell junk to dummies but that strategy seems to have failed them and their previous top of the market was taken over by Leupold. Leupold was wise to offer both very affordable low end scopes of reasonable utility as well as some of the best high end scopes available. I think the high end market is now dominated by Euro scopes with German, Austrian, or Japanese glass.

I totally agree! Those old steel tubed scopes are fantastic and a super value if nothing is broken. I have two right now, a fixed 4 and a fixed 10 like yours.
I also still have the Redfield scope I got from you. I read several different articles that said snipers in Vietnam preferred them if they could get them because they were so much easier to care for than a Unertel. I’m sure I spelled that wrong but anyone that reads this knows what I’m saying. 😂

I have a couple Litschert boosters on old Weaver scopes and they are an excellent upgrade to the old low power Weavers.
